Some Background:

On March 9, 2008 Renata Gonzalez was seriously injured by a hit-and-run driver while riding her bicycle in San Francisco. She suffered tremendous losses, including the life of her Chihuahua, Ari, who had been tucked into her sweatshirt for the ride. For a few moments, Renata even lost her heartbeat on the way to the hospital but thankfully was revived upon arrival. Renata remained in a coma for several weeks, as her broken forearm, pelvis, and shin healed. Twice during that time Renata seemed to be fading, her vital signs becoming dangerously erratic. But she fought through it and lived.

For the next three years, Renata’s family cared for her in her childhood home, working diligently towards her recovery in spite of the severity of her brain injury and her dependence on a ventilator. Although Renata could not move about, care for herself, or speak, she was often able to communicate nonverbally with her family, and her presence filled the room. Renata left peacefully on February 5 of this year with her family by her side.

Our dear friend Mica Gonzalez, in an effort to support his sister’s dreams and aspirations, cosigned on Renata’s student loans for art school. As a result of the accident, Mica owes tens of thousands of dollars to the loan companies and they are relentless. Mica is a new father, a husband, and a graduate student building a life for himself. We (his friends) want to support his dreams and aspirations as he did for Renata. Before Renata was hurt she had been working on a performance art piece entitled, "Recurrence, Repetition, Relinquish" in which she intended to explore what it means to be reborn. Let’s help her finish that performance.

We encourage you to pass the invitation along to your friends.
